Good Stuff

“Do I need physical therapy?” It’s a question we’re often asked by patients who call our office. People who are feeling 100% do not typically ask that question, so let’s start there. What’s happening to make you wonder if you need therapy? Pain is not normal, even if it’s tolerable. Listen to your body—it’s telling you that something is wrong.

The “Daily Life” Test

One way to determine the need is to ask yourself if the issue you’re experiencing is disrupting your normal life. It could be something as simple as walking up the stairs, changing clothes, or stepping out of a car. Is the discomfort you feel getting in the way of these activities? It’s difficult to determine the cause without visiting a clinic, so if any of your answers to the questions above are yes, it’s best to make an appointment with a physical therapist.

If the issue you are experiencing is severe, or the onset was sudden, you should see a physical therapist immediately. New Jersey is a “Direct Access” state so you can call your physical therapy provider and schedule a visit without a referral.

“I’ll just wait to see if it gets better”

Studies have shown that seeking treatment earlier can decrease your recovery time significantly, so if you’re experiencing an issue, it’s best to be proactive. Ultimately, finding the underlying cause of your discomfort is the most important goal.

In most cases, your insurance will cover the cost of physical therapy. At Paramus Orthopedic Physical Therapy, our Client Care Team contacts your insurance provider directly to help you understand your specific plan and benefits, so you know exactly what to expect before even coming in.

During your appointment, over the course of approximately one hour, a Doctor of Physical Therapy will conduct a complete evaluation and discuss the results with you. If physical therapy is an appropriate avenue, we’ll develop a treatment plan that will guide the rest of your visits. Conversely, if another form of treatment would be better for you, we’ll help you find the right specialist.

Our ultimate goal at POPT is to help you feel your best, and we would be honored to help you! Once you find a Doctor of Physical Therapy that you trust with your care, you’re one step closer to recovery.

So, you’ve decided to start a physical therapy program. Logically, the next question should be “Who will provide my therapy?” It’s an important decision, so be sure to ask lots of questions before getting started. Let’s take a look at some important questions to ask a prospective provider:

  • Is this physical therapist licensed and qualified to provide treatment?
  • What is his/her experience and credentials?
  • Is this therapist a Doctor of Physical Therapy?
  • How much hands on, one-on-one time will he/she provide each session?
  • Will I see the same physical therapist each time?

Spend time asking questions and learning about who you’ll be working with. This ensures you’ll find a therapist who meets your individual needs.

Find the right physical therapist

Although not ideal, many clinics simply pair a patient with a therapist who has available time slots. For the most effective treatment, a clinic should intentionally match you with a therapist who is best suited to help you with your specific needs. Your treatment is too important to allow timing to be the only factor.

At Paramus PT, we have a wide range of Doctors of Physical Therapy with expertise in many different areas and will pair you with a therapist who is best suited to your specific needs.

Can I choose my therapist?

Many of our patients come to us via referral, where friends have recommended a specific therapist because “he was amazing” or “she was an incredible help” in their recovery. We understand the desire to work with the therapist you were referred to, and we always listen to your preferences. We also want to match you with a physical therapist who is best suited to your unique situation, so if we have another clinician who is a specialist in your specific concern, we’ll let you know that too. We want you to be happy, we want you to have all the information you need, and most importantly, we want you to get better.

Deciding to seek physical therapy is a positive, proactive step toward improving your health and your quality of life. Once you start your program, keep that forward-moving attitude and apply it to your therapy. Coupled with the right Doctor of Physical Therapy, you’ll be on the road to recovery in no time!

When you think of your genetic structure, you probably think of something unchangeable that you’re simply born with.  Right?

Maybe not!  Recent studies prove that you can actually control the way your genes behave, simply by exercising.  After only one session of exercise, your body immediately begins to drastically lower your risk for developing diabetes, cardiac disease, and metabolic syndrome, along with the many other health issues that can arise from inactivity.  If these health concerns already affect you, exercising can also improve your current quality of life and prevent common complications from ever occurring.

The New York Times recently published a fascinating article about this phenomenon, and we’d encourage you to check it out here.  Now, everyone knows exercise is good for you, but it can be hard to know where to start.  Everyone’s body is different, and each person has their own set of goals and needs.  That’s where we come in.

Paramus Orthopedic Physical Therapy is here to optimize a healthy lifestyle for every individual, offering a range of specialty programs to accommodate all of our patients’ needs, with a focus on getting them to where they want to be — happy, healthy, and strong!  Yes, we treat all injuries and provide relief from discomfort — but we’re so much more than that, too. Here’s just a taste of what we can do for you:

      • Our Functional Movement Screenings identify and improve all areas of imbalance or weakness, which has been proven to prevent injury in those who are very active. Learn how our offices prevent ACL injuries in athletes.
      • Cardiac Physical Therapy is your next step after cardiac rehab. We pick up where cardiac rehab leaves off, to fully and safely get you back to all your favorite activities after a cardiac event.
      • Our Metabolic Rehabilitation Program focuses on lowering glucose levels in our patients with diabetes, allowing them to live freely. Find out how we helped Carl lose 72 Pounds and 99 glucose points!
      • With Breast Cancer Rehabilitation, we can address all the side effects of treatment, including shoulder issues, lymphedema, neuropathy, and other complications. Best of all, we can reduce your fatigue and overall discomfort, helping you enjoy your life more fully.

Unlike other physical therapy offices, who tend to overschedule their patients, we offer each of our patients a full hour of skilled one-on-one care, provided by the most highly credentialed Doctors of Physical Therapy in the state.  And to make things easier for you, New Jersey is a Direct Access state, which means you can come straight to us for physical therapy anytime, without needing to stop for a prescription or referral first.

Call us today at 201-880-9810, to speak with our friendly Client Services Coordinators about what you’d like to get out of your physical therapy!  We will be happy to create a personalized plan just for you.

Did you know that New Jersey is what’s called a Direct Access state?  Receiving quality physical therapy care is far easier than you may think!

Direct Access is a law that was passed in New Jersey in 2003 that states that you do not need to obtain a referral or prescription before attending physical therapy!  Physical therapists are credentialed and licensed healthcare providers who are specifically trained to diagnose, evaluate, and treat physical and movement-related concerns autonomously.  Specifically at Paramus Orthopedic Physical Therapy, 80% of our providers are both licensed Doctors of Physical Therapy and also Board Certified in one or several specialty areas.  Believe it or not, less than 1% of all physical therapists in the nation have this dual distinction.

Why does this matter?  Let’s look at the evidence.  A recent scientific article from the well-respected journal, Health Services Research (HSR), showed that patients got better with fewer visits, and lowered the overall costs of their care, by visiting physical therapy offices directly rather than first going to a physician for a referral.  That’s because the more quickly you begin PT after an injury, the more likely you are to avoid complications, reduce scarring, and simply get back on your feet faster.

In a separate article published in the Professional Case Management journal, Lynn Muller, one of our very own former patients and a registered nurse for over 30 years, describes her personal experience in our organization and how Direct Access made it possible for her to get back to action with physical therapy at our organization, after her total knee replacement.  Muller explains how a Seattle medical center in a 2007 study discovered that, with the antiquated referral method, “patients were going through lengthy wait periods between tests, a reexamination by a doctor, and eventually referral to physical therapy.  It was not until the course of therapy was initiated that improvement was seen.” Muller goes on to explain the results of doing it the Direct Access way: “Patients benefited overall by receiving effective treatment earlier and reducing complications before they had an opportunity to set in.”

At Paramus Orthopedic Physical Therapy, we happily welcome Direct Access patients. All you need to do is call our office, and one of our warm, welcoming front desk associates will be more than happy to get you on our schedule quickly for a full evaluation with one of our highly-skilled, board certified physical therapists — sometimes on the same day!  And as always, if we determine that you need to see a medical doctor or another medical professional or get testing in conjunction with your PT care, we will help you find the provider who is right for you.

Call us today to get started 973-248-8111 — and if you’re already here with us, tell your friends and family about Direct Access to PT!

Carl Drops 72 Pounds and 99 Glucose Points in Under 5 Months with Metabolic Rehabilitation!
Carl is a 35-year-old husband, father, and entrepreneur who was recently diagnosed with diabetes.  Being faced with Type 2 Diabetes at his young age was understandably quite a surprise and, as he puts it, “a wake-up call.”  Knowing the toll that this disease can take on the body, he realized he had two choices: either change his lifestyle or be tied to medication and possibly insulin injections for the rest of his life.

For Carl, the choice was clear — he decided to take his condition into his own hands, and signed up for our physical therapy program for people with diabetes, known as Metabolic Rehabilitation.  The results were astounding, as Carl himself notes:

”My blood glucose level before metabolic rehab was 186 fasting, with an A1C of 9.7 (very diabetic range).  After physical therapy, and with continued diet, the home exercises you prescribed, and some running, my fasting glucose is now 87 with an A1C of 5.3 (very NON-diabetic)!!  When I started dieting, before therapy, I was approximately 257 lbs.  I now weigh between 185-190 lbs, where I currently maintain.

Also, my cholesterol, lipids, and triglycerides were all off the map for years; now I am in the middle norm of those scales!!  Oh, and another thing, since we started this program and I started dieting healthfully, my carpal tunnel issues have virtually disappeared!!  Thank you all for really making this ideal vision of great health a reality for me!! I am eternally grateful!”

Carl is now no longer considered diabetic, and everyone who knows him has been floored and inspired by the incredible difference in the way he looks and feels!  By continuing the same level of work and dedication he has shown throughout his recovery thus far, he will be able to live a long and happy, diabetes-free life with his wife and daughter!

You, too, can achieve amazing results of your own by enrolling in our Metabolic Rehabilitation program!  Whether you have diabetes, are considered “pre-diabetic,” or simply are at risk for developing diabetes in the future, call us today at 201-880-9810 to take action and start down your personal road to recovery!

When Susan first found out she had diabetes, she was afraid that her only option was to be on medication for the rest of her life. But then she found another option: Paramus Orthopedic Physical Therapy!

POPT’s Metabolic Rehabilitation program is for anyone who has diabetes or pre-diabetes. We help patients, just like Susan, manage their diabetes without medication. In some cases, we can even help patients remove the need for diabetes medication entirely! With a scientifically proven combination of exercises specifically customized to your body and its needs, our doctors of physical therapy can lower patients’ glucose levels and prevent or improve any complications.

The choice seemed a simple one for Susan. She took an active role in her physical therapy, under her Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT)’s constant supervision and counsel. And within only four weeks, Susan’s glucose levels had dropped an amazing 40 points! That is comparable to the effects of glucose medication in most patients, and Susan accomplished it the all-natural way. Following her DPT’s guidance on diet and lifestyle, she made his specialized exercise program a part of her daily life and continues to achieve amazing results.

Susan’s story seems incredible, but she’s living proof that physical therapy can help you achieve great success in diabetes management! You, too, can lower your glucose levels, lower your risk for diabetes-related complications, and achieve a new lease on life! Results may vary from person to person, but we’ll work our hardest to help you achieve your personal goals. Call us at 201-880-9810 to get started today!
